To boost cultural tourism, the revitalization of the ancient city of Al Hira, which dates back four centuries, has begun in Sharjah.
Dr Sheikh Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, member of the Supreme Council and ruler of Sharjah, recently inaugurated the monument to commemorate the founding of the city of Al Hira in 1613, the year the Al Qawasim tribe first arrived in the enclave coastal.
Sheikh Sultan also opened the house of Sultan bin Abdullah bin Majid Al Owais, which was converted into a 900 square meter Al Hira literary Majlis.

The project to revive Al Hira Old Town also includes reviving the houses of Sultan bin Abdullah bin Majid Al Owais, Hamid Khalaf Bu Khasrah and Khalifa Sultan Al Suwaidi.
Nabati Poetry Center
Al Hira is considered “a center for the development of the strong Nabati poetry tradition of the United Arab Emirates.” Poetry meetings, dialogues and literary meetings were held in Al Hira.
During his visit to Al Hira, Sheikh Sultan also witnessed the first performance of the play ‘Al Hira Majlis’, as part of the activities of the 20th edition of the Sharjah Arabic Poetry Festival.
The play, performed by the Sharjah National Theater group; written by Sheikh Sultan and published by Al Qasimi Publications, it documents the history of Al Hira and the movement of the Al Qawasim tribe.
According to history, the people of Al Hira were famous for their courage, generosity and wealth. They were interested in science, arts and literature, and among them stood out a group of wise men, philosophers, writers and poets.
Boosting tourism
The revival of Al Hira is the latest project in Sharjah’s campaign to boost tourism projects. In 2022, the Sharjah Investment and Development Authority announced the development of Al Hira Beach, the longest beach in Sharjah.
