The MoU was signed by Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD and CEO of DEWA and Sarah Al Amiri, Minister of State for Public Education and Advanced Technology and Chairperson of the UAE Space Agency.
“We are pleased to collaborate with the UAE Space Agency to achieve the aspirations of the wise leadership of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE; and His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Dubai, to enhance the sustainability and Emiratization of the UAE space industry and enhance Emirati talents,” stated Al Tayer.
He said this will preserve the progress made by the UAE in the race for global competitiveness and its leadership in this vital sector. “The United Arab Emirates is at the forefront of space science and technology with unprecedented achievements at the Arab and global levels. This supports the realization of new achievements, in line with the National Space Strategy 2030, which supports the UAE’s vision in the various sciences, technologies, applications and services of the space industry,” he said.
“Since His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum launched DEWA’s Space-D program in January 2021, we have come a long way in developing DEWA’s capabilities and training Emirati professionals to use space technologies to improve our electricity and water networks. We have leveraged Fourth Industrial Revolution technologies such as IoT, AI and blockchain to exchange information with the help of satellite communications and Earth observation technologies. “DEWA has successfully launched two nanosatellites, DEWA SAT-1 and DEWA SAT-2, making it the first utility in the world to use nanosatellites to improve the maintenance and planning of electricity and water networks,” Al Tayer added.
Minister Al Amiri said: “This strategic partnership with DEWA opens new horizons towards innovation in the space sector. Combining our expertise in space technology with DEWA’s capabilities will contribute to the development of innovative solutions that enhance the UAE’s position as a global hub in space and technology. “We are committed to enhancing cooperation to drive progress in smart infrastructure and achieve the UAE’s vision of an advanced and sustainable future to support space startups and advanced technology sectors.”
“This partnership marks an important milestone towards exploring new possibilities in data utilization and analysis using AI and IoT, benefiting from DEWA smart services and supporting the Spatial Data Centre. This contributes to the development of advanced space applications that support and serve different sectors in the UAE. It also reflects our ambitious vision for the UAE to become a global model in innovation and technology. “We are committed to creating a stimulating environment that encourages innovation and nurtures young minds, to contribute to the renaissance of holistic development over the next fifty years and to support the UAE’s journey towards an innovative and sustainable future in space,” added Al Amiri.
