From drone shows to light installations, Dubai will light up when its shopping festival begins on December 8. The Dubai Shopping Festival (DSF) will of course include promotions, retail offers and giveaways, but the 38-day event is so much more. That only purchases and big profits.
The 29th edition of the festival, which will take place from December 8 to January 14, will feature pop-up markets, food experiences, art installations and sporting events.
Here are some of the key free events to look out for; and how to try your luck winning cash, gold and cars.
let there be light
Dubai Lights is a free-entry public art exhibition and, as the name suggests, features lighting installations.
Anooki.
Anooki, the inflatable characters: These giant characters will light up Al Seef and d3. Created by French designers Moetu Batlle and David Passegand, the characters are ambassadors of the environment.
Journey of lights: Around 40 of Dubai’s abras (traditional boats) will be illuminated with neon lights as part of the event, making the creek glow.
Neon world.
Neon world: In the old Gold Souk, visitors can stroll through the market adorned with neon signs.
Passable lights: West Beach at Palm Jumeirah will feature walkable scenes including life-size installations of Amazonian parrots, intricate floral artwork and more, all inspired by the world’s largest rainforest.
Dancing drones that tell a story
According to organizers, this year’s drone show will be the DSF’s “most sensational” yet. From December 10 to January 14, more than 800 drones will light up the Bluewaters sky twice each night. The dancing drones will take off at 8:00 pm and 10:00 pm to tell two stories: one about the importance of the Pearl in Dubai; and the other about an Emirati space explorer who enters a portal that takes him to the future.
Khaleej Times got an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the show last time here. Read about it here.
