The rise of the United Arab Emirates in just a few decades has served as an inspiration to the world. One would wonder when and how it all started? This new encyclopedia answers the question.
The National Library and Archives (NLA) recently launched the first encyclopedia of UAE history at a dazzling ceremony in Abu Dhabi attended by leading cultural and academic figures, including specialists, experts and researchers.
The project, which seeks to preserve the nation’s memory, compiles “the NLA’s holdings and treasures of historical records, documents and sources on the Gulf region… and the United Arab Emirates,” according to the library’s director general national, Abdullah. Majed Al Ali.
Behind this encyclopedia are scientific committees and teams composed of renowned and carefully selected researchers, academics and intellectuals.
“He Encyclopedia of UAE History stands apart from all others by virtue of its authentic and documented historical information that provides various users with a vast fund of knowledge and easy access to the ancient and glorious history of the UAE that the founder and builder of the UAE, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, considered the real and essential gateway to understanding the present and perceiving the future,” Al Ali said.
It will initially be published in digital format and will consist of seven sections, the first of which focuses on the geography, location, area, natural resources and physical characteristics of the UAE. The other sections will deal with the history of the country.
It is expected to be completed in five years, according to the authority.
As part of the process, the NLA encourages and welcomes the participation of scientific and cultural institutions, researchers and specialists to further enrich the encyclopedia.
History holds a special place in the United Arab Emirates. As the President, His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, has said: “The history of man in the land of the United Arab Emirates is a story that goes back thousands of years and is told to future generations and the world. The deserts, mountains and seas are witnesses of the greatness of man and the manifestations of his creativity and resilience in the face of life’s difficulties.
“This land is evidence of successive civilizations that survived despite harsh circumstances and great challenges thanks to the impressive determination of its great men, thanks to whom it currently enjoys this development, prosperity and progress.”
