Dubai: FedEx creates Dh1.3bn hub for Middle East, Indian subcontinent and Africa – News

FedEx Express (FedEx) said on Tuesday that it is expanding its presence with its new Middle East, Indian Subcontinent and Africa (MEISA) hub at Dubai World Central Airport (DWC) in Dubai South.
The facility was officially inaugurated by Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman of the Dubai Civil Aviation Authority, Chairman of Dubai Airports and Chairman and CEO of Emirates Airline and Group, together with Raj Subramaniam, Chairman and CEO of FedEx Corporation, Richard W. Smith, President and CEO of FedEx Express, Airline and International, and Kami Viswanathan, President of FedEx Express MEISA.
The launch of the center marks a long-term investment of more than $350 million (Dh1.3 billion) in the UAE economy through infrastructure and technological advancements at the facility.
The 57,000 square meter facility incorporates advanced technologies including automated sortation systems that improve the efficiency, accuracy and speed of package processing and distribution from the facility. The center also has two automated high-speed X-ray machines equipped with artificial intelligence, to efficiently scan goods and improve security. Additionally, a 170 m2 cold storage area serves a wide range of temperature-sensitive shipments.
The facility meets Dubai Municipality’s green standards and includes a solar energy project and a building management system that helps ensure efficient energy use. Additionally, FedEx is leveraging the electric ground service fleet along with electric charging stations for pickup, delivery and employee vehicles.

“Given the UAE’s current status among the top five countries in global re-export operations, our regional center not only aims to serve the MEISA region, which represents approximately 45 percent of the world’s population, but is also a part crucial part of our global air network that connects 220 countries and territories,” said Richard W. Smith.
