UAE ‘deeply disappointed’ by UN vote in Gaza as US vetoes call for ceasefire

“After more than four months of carnage and with no end in sight, this war must end,” said the United Arab Emirates Mission to the UN.

The Saudi Foreign Ministry also regretted the veto and urged the Security Council to reform itself to fulfill its responsibilities in maintaining peace and security with credibility and without double standards.

The United States vetoed a draft United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolution for the third time on Tuesday, blocking a demand for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire and instead pushing the 15-member body toward a rival draft that demands a temporary ceasefire linked to the release of hostages held by Hamas.

The United States has said the draft resolution presented by Algeria could jeopardize “delicate negotiations” between the United States, Egypt, Israel and Qatar aimed at mediating a pause in the fighting and securing the release of hostages.

This was the sixth resolution on Gaza to be vetoed by the United States, Britain, Russia or China.
