A new project will repair and rebuild the iconic walls of Dubai Creek, which have withstood various challenges for more than 50 years. It will prevent potential flooding during adverse weather conditions and minimize disruptions to commercial traffic.

The Dh112 million Dubai Municipality project will be implemented in two phases. The initial phase will restore a 2.1 kilometer stretch along the Deira side of the Dubai Creek. The site will be divided into several sections and each segment will have a sequential pattern to ensure uninterrupted docking traffic. The second phase will cover a length of 2.3 km on the Bur Dubai side.

The project will also install 200 anchors along the creek to ensure safe navigation services and facilities.

Dubai artery

A symbol of the city’s growth, Dubai Creek serves as an artery in the heart of Dubai, facilitating the passage of more than 13,000 ships a year.

“The project aims to improve safety measures for maritime traffic and commercial operations within Dubai Creek,” said Dawoud Al Hajri, director general of Dubai Municipality. “[The Creek] plays a key role in fostering the economic and social prosperity of the emirate. Additionally, the creek further supports trade agreements with neighboring markets in the region.”

He also stated that Dubai Municipality is committed to transforming Dubai’s coastal facilities and infrastructure. The aim is to solidify Dubai’s position as a global tourism hub and increase its economic and commercial prosperity.

“We have implemented several measures to mitigate the risks posed by climate change and sea level rise, closely monitoring changes on both sides of the creek,” he added. “In addition, we have carried out technical studies to devise construction designs that can improve the efficiency of marine docks on both shores. These designs meet the highest global standards, ensuring the preservation of the stability of the supporting walls and protecting against the “increased flooding during the season. climatic conditions.”

Comprehensive work

The project’s 14-month schedule includes the restoration of the 2.1 kilometer Deira Pier, which will involve replacing and repairing damaged sections of the concrete wall, reaching a depth of 8 meters and increasing its height to 3 meters.

These improvements will ensure the safe docking of ships in the area. Dubai Creek is one of the Emirate’s most important historic shipping channels and marked the beginning of Dubai’s commercial interactions with the world more than a century ago.

Despite extensive development in the emirate, Creek continues to maintain its historical, commercial and economic importance, along with the modern projects prevalent in the emirate, as well as serving as a major tourism hub for residents, visitors and tourists.
