Marking the Year of Sustainability, an Abu Dhabi-based healthcare provider announced plans to become carbon neutral by 2040 through several green measures, including medical waste management and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. greenhouse.
The ambitious climate goal is part of Burjeel Holdings’ long-term environmental, social and governance (ESG) strategy that covers four key pillars: a healthy environment, community, governance and system.
To achieve carbon neutrality by 2040, Burjeel has set medium-term targets to reduce Scope 1, 2 and 3 greenhouse gas emissions. Scope 1 are direct company emissions, and Scope 2 and 3 are emissions indirect. The healthcare provider aims to reduce combined Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2024, primarily by focusing on efficient energy consumption, such as vehicle fuel and electricity. Next year, Burjeel will develop a strategy to account for Scope 3 emissions.

The organization is committed to eliminating medical waste, with the goal of achieving zero waste to landfills by 2040. In 2023, Burjeel operations generated 1,575 tons of medical waste, a 3 percent drop compared to 2022. Additionally, plans to reduce water consumption by 10 percent. by 2030, focusing on reusing 5 percent of the total water consumed annually.

Impacting 7 million lives
Burjeel seeks to positively impact over 7 million lives annually by 2026 through various community initiatives. The organization aims to have 30 percent of corporate employees participate in at least one community volunteer activity annually starting next year. Patient education programs will be implemented for 70 percent of active patients with chronic diseases by 2026. The organization also aims to maintain a high percentage of independent directors on its board of directors.
“At the time of the IPO, we created a board of recognized experts, of which 70 percent are independent directors, and in 2023 we established a Sustainability and Business Development Committee to ensure we embed sustainability throughout our business,” Dr Shamsheer said.
Employee training programs on data privacy and security, ethics and compliance, health and safety; increase the representation of women in leadership positions to 30 percent or more; and maintaining a balanced gender ratio are among the planned objectives to be achieved by 2030.
