The United Arab Emirates leads the human development index regionally and ranks 17th globally

The United Arab Emirates ranked first regionally in the Human Development Index 2023/2024 report issued by the United Nations Development Programme, It advanced nine places in the global ranking compared to the previous report, reaching 17th place worldwide among 193 countries covered in the report, ahead of countries such as Canada, the United States and Japan, thus achieving prestigious status and becoming the only Arab country. among the top 20 worldwide.
Abdulla Nasser Lootah, Deputy Minister of Cabinet Affairs for Competitiveness and Knowledge Sharing, recognizes the UAE Government’s commitment to serving humanity under the leadership of Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. It highlights the UAE’s regional leadership and global excellence in human development, attributing success to comprehensive policies that promote prosperity and sustainable development in the areas of education, health, economy and living standards.
Hanan Mansour Ahli, Director General of the Federal Center for Competitiveness and Statistics, emphasizes the UAE’s aspiration to excel in global competitiveness reports, focusing on human well-being. She attributes the UAE’s 17th place in the global human development ranking to collaborative efforts between federal and local entities, with the aim of achieving continuous progress in competitiveness and social well-being.
According to this year’s report titled “Reimagining Cooperation in a Polarized World,” the UAE’s score reached 0.937, advancing 0.026 points from last year, while Switzerland, which ranked first globally, scored score of 0.967. The UAE’s score on the life expectancy at birth indicator reached 79.2 years, contributing to the third goal of the Sustainable Development Goals (Good Health and Well-being), adopted by United Nations Member States for the Agenda Sustainable Development 2030. The UAE’s score on the expected years of schooling indicator was 17.2 years, while the average years of schooling was 12.8 years, reflecting the fourth goal (Quality Education ), while the gross national income per capita was 74,104 US dollars.
It is worth mentioning that the Human development report is issued annually by the United Nations Development Program since 1990, and is a composite index that reflects the well-being of the world’s people through three dimensions (health, knowledge and standard of living), represented in four indicators: life expectancy at birth, expected years of schooling, average years of schooling and gross national income per capita.
