Sheikh Hamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, CEO of Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, attended the conference along with several top healthcare experts. The conference was held at the Majlis Mohamed bin Zayed venue in Abu Dhabi’s Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque.

During the conference, Dr. Mohre focused on what she called the “intersection of technology and healthcare,” discussing the advantages of robotic surgery, the use of AI and machine learning, and their benefits for patients , doctors and students.

Dr. Mohr explored how emerging technologies can help solve so-called “wicked problems,” those with a large gap between what the doctor wants to be able to do for his or her patient and what is actually possible.

He gave the example of the diagnosis and treatment of lung cancer, giving details of a new technique that combines a robotic catheter with machine learning algorithms that allows doctors to explore the bronchial tree, take biopsies and even remove tumors, drastically reducing the time of treatment and without the need for invasive surgery.

The conference then focused on education and opportunities offered by technology, for example the ability to analyze data from millions of procedures because robotic surgery allows the surgeon’s movements to be observable. Explaining how this can benefit medical students, he said, “We begin to be able to characterize and understand the experience, and that helps us teach it.”

Dr. Mohr went on to discuss the challenge of training a sufficient number of surgeons to treat a growing population, and how AI-based technologies could allow surgical training to expand exponentially, especially in some “low-tech” settings. .

He said doctors could learn skills for themselves using AI, which would assess their progress and provide immediate feedback. The lecture was moderated by Dr. Mishal AlQasimi, CEO of Capital Health Specialized Rehabilitation Hospital and Health Shield Medical Center.

It featured pre-recorded contributions from Dr. Jorge Guzmán, president and CEO of Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi; Prof Humaid Alshamsi, Consultant and Director of Oncology, Burjeel Medical City; Dr. Muna Tahlak, President of the International Hospital Federation; and Dr. Walid Zaher, co-founder and CEO of Carexso.
