Indian curriculum schools in Dubai are preparing to welcome students to classrooms from April 1. However, this return to learning will be short-lived as students will soon take a break for the Eid Al Fitr holidays. Scheduled for April 9 or 10, pending moon sightings, this festive occasion will likely be one of the longest holidays of the year.

Students and their families could enjoy up to nine days off in April to celebrate Eid, which falls after the holy month of Ramadan.

However, students enrolled in schools with international curricula enjoy a three-week break for spring break, which began Monday. Classes are scheduled to resume after the Eid holidays on April 15.

Meanwhile, principals of schools with Indian curricula stressed that institutions are well prepared to welcome new students this year. During the first week, students typically adjust to their new classes and routines and become familiar with their teachers and classmates.

Lalitha Suresh, principal of GEMS Our Own Indian School, said, “The school will follow Ramadan timings until the Eid holidays. Academic and behavioral expectations are established, rules and regulations are reiterated, and buddies are designated for new students. Generally, no assessments are carried out during the first week, apart from benchmark tests carried out by subject teachers to assess student levels.”

The curriculum program in all schools includes the induction of students to their new grades by their teachers and introductory subject lessons.

Amity School Dubai principal Sangita Chima said: “There will be no assessments for us. We look forward to welcoming students to an exciting new week of learning ahead of the Eid holidays. This will acclimatize them to the new classes and their teachers, and allow them to return after Eid to a familiar and comfortable environment.”

Similarly, Deepika Thapar Singh, CEO and Principal of Credence High School, added: “This period is dedicated to settling in, forging connections and understanding the daily school routine.”

Principals also emphasized that having students in school at this time will help institutions chart next steps on baselines and purposeful activities that allow students to break the ice with their peers, especially new entrants.

“This year, we are working closely with Dubai Cares to raise funds for their initiatives. As we are still in the holy month of Ramadan, we will have the opportunity to review the concept of Zakat (charity). Furthermore, the week provides us with opportune moments to instill the importance of the Islamic traditions and heritage of the UAE among our students. In this way, we foresee great moments of reflection that will permeate the following Eid celebrations,” said Fatima Martin, director of GEMS New Millennium School – Al Khail.

The heads of institutions also highlighted that the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) board exams for class 10 students end on April 2.

This year, in certain schools, the first week of the new session will have Ramadan-related activities that will offer valuable information about the meaning and spiritual practices of Ramadan and its impact on global society.
