New attraction in the UAE: a lake between mountains open to visitors now in Sharjah – News

Residents and tourists can now enjoy a new attraction in the city of Sharjah. On Saturday afternoon, a lake was inaugurated that serves as a strategic water reservoir for the population.

Called Al Hefaiyah, the water body is located on the Sharjah-Kalba highway after the Al Hiyar tunnel and is part of the emirate’s upcoming urban development projects.


A 3.17-kilometer dual-lane highway surrounds the lake, allowing tourists to stroll around and enjoy the picturesque view, along with a 620-square-meter play area for children.

Earlier this month, the Hanging Gardens, with more than 100,000 trees spread over an area of ​​1.6 million square feet and rising to a height of 281 meters above sea level, opened in Kalba for residents. .

The lake was inaugurated by Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, who was present with Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Crown Prince and Deputy Ruler of Sharjah, and Sheikh Abdullah bin Salem bin Sultan. The lake extends over 132,000 square meters and has been built with the latest technology, including innovative building materials suitable for the mountainous climate, pipes linking the mountains and the lake for storage of surplus water, rainwater harvesting and management of valley runoff.

With a capacity of 155 million gallons and a depth of up to four meters, it features a 2-mile-long water conduit to bring water from the surrounding lowlands and mountains. Three barriers and filters have been erected to minimize the entry of water from the valley into the lake and purify it of contaminants and sediments.

The Lakeside Mountain Trail extends for 11.7 km and includes a variety of trails of different lengths and difficulty levels, including the Al Hefaiyah Lake Trail, the Eastern Mountain Trail, the Al Friesh South Mountain, Al Friesh North Mountain Trail and Al Friesh Lake Trail.

The lake also has a mosque on the premises with capacity for 495 worshipers. The ruler of the emirate raised the curtain on the plaque of the Al Hefaiyah mosque, marking its formal opening, and led the audience in the Maghrib prayer.

The mosque, which covers an area of ​​852 square meters, is designed in Fatimid style and decorated with geometric and floral themes. It has a 36-meter-high minaret, a women’s prayer hall for 110 worshipers, an open-air courtyard for 2,040 worshipers, an Islamic library with books on interpretation, jurisprudence and legal rulings, and several ablution areas and toilets for men. and women.

The Al Hefaiyah Lake project also includes the Al Hefaiyah Rest House, which is 500 square meters and has a direct view of the lake and the high mountains of Kalba, with the Hanging Gardens and waterfalls on one side and a children’s play area. 8,500 square meters. and green spaces on the other.
