UAE announces first day of Eid Al Fitr

The Shawwal crescent that marks the end of Ramadan has not been seen in the United Arab Emirates.

The holy month will last 30 full days and Tuesday will mark the end of Ramadan. Eid Al Fitr, the Islamic holiday, will be celebrated on Wednesday April 10. This gives public and private sector employees a nine-day break, including weekends.

The UAE moon sighting committee had urged Muslims to look for the crescent moon. In the Islamic calendar, each month lasts 29 or 30 days, determined by the appearance of the crescent. Muslims look for the crescent on the 29th of each month.

Since Eid falls on Wednesday, here’s what it means for residents regarding the length of the holiday, free parking, toll hours, and Eid prayer times.

The longest vacation of the year.

The holiday began on Monday, April 8, which coincided with Ramadan 29, and will continue throughout the week. This means that all UAE residents will enjoy a nine-day holiday, including the weekends before and after the holiday, from April 6 to 14. They will resume work on Monday, April 15.

Free parking

Dubai: Free parking in Dubai started on Sunday, April 7, which is the usual day of the week for free parking. It will remain free until Friday, April 12, offering motorists six days of free parking. Normal parking rates will resume starting Saturday, April 13.

Abu Dhabi: Parking is free in the UAE capital from Monday, April 8 to Sunday, April 14. The charges will be reinstated starting Monday, April 15. With the inclusion of the Sunday before the holiday, this adds up to a total of eight days of free parking.

Sharjah: Parking will be free from Wednesday, April 10 to Friday, April 12 in all areas except those marked with blue signs. This is equivalent to three days of free parking. Parking fees will be applicable again starting Saturday, April 13.
