An Indian expatriate working at Abu Dhabi-based hypermarket chain Lulu is alleged to have absconded with cash worth Dh660,000.
Lulu Group International, in a statement, said it filed a complaint with the Abu Dhabi police against the employee.
The 38-year-old expatriate, originally from the southern Indian state of Kerala, was in charge of the cashier’s office at the LuLu hypermarket in the Khalidiya shopping center in the city of Abu Dhabi.

The hypermarket management launched an internal investigation after the employee, who was supposed to report to work in the afternoon on March 25, did not show up. Attempts to contact him were unsuccessful as his mobile phone was switched off. A subsequent audit revealed a deficit of more than Dh600,000 in the treasury.
“As [he] was responsible for handling the cash, the company held his passport, making it difficult for him to leave the UAE,” Lulu said in a statement. Her whereabouts remain unclear.
The expatriate had worked with the Lulu Group for the past 15 years. He resided in Abu Dhabi with his wife and his two children. However, following his alleged disappearance, his family was reported to have left the UAE without notifying anyone, the group said in a statement.
Significantly, Lulu Group noted that with the help of the Indian Embassy in Abu Dhabi, it also filed a complaint against the expatriate with the Kerala Police.
