Abu Dhabi Police to Hold Exercises at Barakah Nuclear Power Plant This Month – News

Abu Dhabi Police Headquarters, in collaboration with several strategic partners, has announced the organization of the UAE Exercise Barakah 2023 which will take place in October.
The exercise will take place on October 11.
Planned as a biennial event in the future, the UAE Exercise Barakah will run for a continuous duration of 36 hours under the supervision of the National Emergency, Crisis and Disaster Management Authority and aims to ensure the preparedness of the emergency response ecosystem nuclear and radiological of the UAE.
The exercise has been designed in compliance with the Emergency and Preparedness Regulations for Nuclear Facilities (FANR-REG-12), issued by the Federal Nuclear Regulation Authority (FANR). The regulation establishes that the operator must have a comprehensive response ecosystem for nuclear and radiological emergencies, in collaboration with relevant stakeholders.
The UAE’s Exercise Barakah 2023 was designed in accordance with international best practices in the areas of nuclear and radiological emergency response assessment. The exercise includes real scenarios for various emergency cases at the Barakah nuclear power plant and its adjacent areas to continue improving the preparation of rapid responses to emergency cases, in accordance with the best global standards of safety, security and transparency.
Participating strategic partners of Abu Dhabi Police include the Ministry of Defence, the Ministry of Interior, the Ministry of Health and Prevention, the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR), the National Emergency Crisis and Disaster Management Authority ( NCEMA), and the Abu Dhabi Civil Defense Authority (ADCDA). , Abu Dhabi Disaster and Crisis Management Center (ADCMC), Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC), Nawah Energy Company and Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC).
Pilot Major General Faris Khalaf Al Mazrouei, Commander-in-Chief of Abu Dhabi Police and Director of the exercise, said: “The coordination and collaboration between federal and local entities in Abu Dhabi to carry out the UAE’s Barakah exercise emphasizes the UAE’s prowess in “The areas of business continuity and emergency response. “This collective effort further enhances our preparedness to quickly address risks and strengthen our ability to respond promptly.”
Hamad Al Kaabi, Director of the Hazardous Materials Incident Department at NCEMA and Head of the Monitoring and Evaluation Committee, highlighted that the UAE’s hosting of Exercise Barakah 2023 aligns with the continued successful efforts to raise the level of preparedness and proactive responses to address nuclear incidents.
Al Kaabi said: “After successfully conducting the IAEA ConvEx-3, we look forward to working and collaborating with strategic partners in the emergency and crisis management community during this important and special exercise to showcase the capabilities of UAE experts. to the entire world to respond to various emergency scenarios.”
Brigadier General Hamdan Saif Al Mansoori, Director of Al Dhafra Police Directorate and commander of the event in the Barakah ecosystem, said: “The UAE’s hosting of Exercise Barakah 2023 comes after conducting a series of field exercises to improve rapid response capabilities, in collaboration with strategic partners in command, control and media in various activities such as firefighting, rescue and monitoring at the Reception, Accommodation and Medical Response Center, in accordance with the “most advanced global practices.”
Al Mansoori also praised the coordination and cooperation efforts with strategic partners within the emergency and crisis ecosystem in the exercise.
Christer Viktorsson, Director General of the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR), said: “The United Arab Emirates has managed to emphasize the preparedness of its ecosystem to respond to the nuclear and radiological emergency at the Barakah nuclear power plant by hosting the IAEA ConvEx-3 in 2021. Under the name ConvEx-3 UAE Barakah, in addition to other exercises organized in collaboration with national and international partners, highlighting that safety and security are its top priority. Exercise UAE Barakah 2023 will play a fundamental role in efforts aimed at achieving success, through enhanced cooperation with various partners to ensure the protection of the community and the environment.
Mohamed Ibrahim Al Hammadi, Managing Director and CEO of Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC), emphasized that the UAE’s peaceful nuclear program has become a global model due to its commitment to the highest global standards and best practices in the nuclear energy sector, including an advanced emergency response ecosystem, and UAE national experts in the field of nuclear energy ensuring the enhanced role of the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant in supporting energy security and achieving emissions net zero by 2050.
The main objective of the UAE’s Exercise Barakah 2023 is to accentuate dedicated efforts aimed at strengthening security, establishing credibility and ensuring transparency at the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant facilities in Abu Dhabi. The plant plays a critical role in diversifying energy sources, providing sustainable electricity to homes, businesses and public facilities, while curbing carbon emissions in the UAE.
