Mariam bint Mohammed Almheiri, Minister of Climate Change and Environment, addressing an audience of government ministers, senior business leaders, delegates and climate advocates on the final day of ‘Future Climate Week’ held at the Museum of the Future , highlighting the holding of the COP28 climate change conference in November 2023.
Almheiri underlined the importance of COP28, which will mark the conclusion of the first Global Stocktake, which will provide a comprehensive assessment of nations’ progress since the adoption of the Paris Agreement, and will assist climate action efforts, including the implementation of measures to bridge the gap. gaps in progress.
He reaffirmed the UAE’s commitment to climate action and stressed that COP28 “must be the turning point that drives climate action forward over the next decade.”
He continued: “The UAE has always given top priority to reducing emissions and has always been a careful steward of its natural resources.” Almheiri also highlighted the UAE’s commitment to sustainability and reminded the audience that the UAE was the first country in the region to announce a Net Zero target for 2050.
He went on to report that the UAE has set a goal of a 40 per cent reduction in climate emissions by 2030 and reaffirmed the importance of collaboration between government, industry and community stakeholders, exemplifying the approach of the UAE towards climate action.
Almheiri concluded his speech by emphasizing the important role that COP28 plays and how the UAE aims to deliver the most impactful and inclusive “Conference of the Parties” to date, also highlighting the four-pillar action plan to accelerate a responsible energy transition . transform climate finance, focus on people, lives and livelihoods in adaptation efforts, and ensure the next COP28 is fully inclusive and solutions-driven.
