Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi now a ‘Center of Excellence’ for adult cardiac surgery

Abu Dhabi: The Abu Dhabi Department of Health (DoH), the healthcare sector regulator in the emirate, has announced Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi as a center of excellence (CoE) for adult cardiac surgery.
The announcement ceremony took place at the DoH headquarters, where Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi received the CoE plaque in the presence of Dr. Noura Khamis Al Ghaithi, Undersecretary of the DoH; Hasan Al Nowais, Chairman of Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi and Chairman and CEO of M42 Group; and Dr. Jorge Guzmán, CEO of Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, as well as Dr. Mumtaz Khan, chief of staff and interim medical director of Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi.
As a designated CoE for adult cardiac surgery, Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi houses ICU facilities and cardiac operating theatres, which operate with the support of core services including state-of-the-art multidisciplinary cardiovascular medicine, interventional cardiology, electrophysiology and a state-of-the-art structural cardiac programme.

CoEs are healthcare facilities designated by the Department of Health to provide specialized programs in specific medical areas in accordance with best practices and the highest quality standards. The CoEs stand out for their world-class infrastructure, highly qualified and internationally accredited workforce, multidisciplinary resources, cutting-edge technologies and the latest innovations in healthcare, and clinical and scientific research, while providing the best healthcare in their class. class to patients in the emirate and beyond.
Importance of CoE
Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, appointed by the DoH as CoE for Adult Cardiac Surgery, will become the primary destination for all patients receiving adult cardiac surgery treatments and services. It will provide patients with access to a wide range of treatment options and quality care in the field of adult cardiac surgery.
To further cement its position as the emirate’s CoE for adult cardiac surgery, Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi will boost research and education in the field of cardiac sciences. The Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi Heart, Vascular and Thoracic Institute will collaborate with existing partners and health technology incubators to bring world-class research, education and innovation to Abu Dhabi.
CoEs must meet the minimum standard requirements issued by the DoH, which outline the criteria and prerequisites necessary for licensed healthcare facilities seeking to acquire the designation. The Department of Health outlined six key indicators that are taken into account when assessing whether the healthcare facility can be recognized as a CoE. The indicators cover the following points: clinical outcomes, patient experience, patient safety and quality of medical services, employee competency levels and facility medical education, research strategies and residency programs. The DoH also evaluates accreditations to determine the healthcare facility’s eligibility to become a CoE.
