RTA begins supervised testing of autonomous vehicles on Jumeirah 1

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) and Cruise, a self-driving technology company, began supervised trials of autonomous vehicles based on Chevrolet Bolt in he Jumeirah area 1.

This test of autonomous Cruise technology with a safety driver present is the fruitful result of the joint effort of RTA and Cruise following successful data collection and testing efforts on closed test tracks.

Separately, Cruise has been offering a driverless transportation service in the US since February 2022. During a recent trip to San Francisco, RTACruise’s technical team conducted cruise trips, confirming RTA’s confidence in Cruise technology.

The trial is also seen as a step forward on the path to ensuring RTADubai’s strategic objectives are to make MENA’s first autonomous transportation experience a success, as well as elevate Dubai’s autonomous leadership in the region, enhance its global leadership in autonomous mobility and further its aspirations to become the smartest city. of the world. Such an effort, which requires investments in smart mobility and the application of sophisticated technologies, aligns with RTA’s commitment to strengthening the well-being and safety of Dubai residents, tourists and visitors.

Cruise will validate the safety and autonomous driving performance of autonomous cruise vehicles in Dubai and the compatibility of autonomous vehicle requirements in the digital and physical infrastructure for the target operation area in Jumeirah 1.

The team will also work to improve the performance of the autonomous technology during tests and demonstrations that show the maturity of the Cruise vehicles, especially during critical traffic situations in Dubai. The initial stages of Dubai’s road trials of Cruise autonomous vehicles will include a safety driver present behind the wheel.

In the same context, RTA achieved a historic milestone by issuing the first permit to test autonomous vehicles (AV) in Dubai. The trial permit was officially handed over to Cruise, with whom RTA has a partnership agreement to operate autonomous vehicles to offer taxi and e-hailing services in the emirate of Dubai in the future.

All these tireless efforts are in line with the achievement of the Vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al MaktoumVice President, Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Dubai, to convert 25% of travel to autonomous by 2030, RTA is committed to implementing the highest standards and providing a comprehensive system that allows autonomous taxi to operate safely in Dubai for years to come.
