Sharjah Police anti-drug forces have thwarted an international criminal gang comprising 32 Asian and Arab nationals in an operation dubbed “Revealing the Curtain”. The gang attempted to smuggle a substantial amount of narcotics and more than one million psychotropic substances into the country. The estimated market value of the contraband amounted to a staggering Dh14 million. This operation was carried out in collaboration with the security services of neighboring countries.

Colonel Majid Al Assam, Director of the Sharjah Police Anti-Narcotics Department, revealed that the Department received information from a source who alerted them to an international criminal network that aimed to import narcotics for distribution and trade within the United Arab Emirates. . The gang used sophisticated techniques to execute their operation discreetly, avoiding detection.

He added that after confirming the information, the anti-narcotics units of the Sharjah Police launched a surveillance and investigation team. Through meticulous evidence collection and 24-hour monitoring, the team arrested a group with 50kg of cannabis and 49 liters of liquid crystal.

During interrogations it was discovered that this group was receiving instructions from a contact abroad. Further investigation revealed an extensive criminal network in several countries, with other groups operating in a similar manner. A secret warehouse in a neighboring emirate was the gang’s headquarters for storing illegal substances. Sharjah Police arrested the remaining members of the gang and confiscated more than 1,170,000 psychotropic pills.

The gang used two new methods to smuggle narcotic substances: first, they exploited the services of a customs clearance company to smuggle illegal psychotropic substances. Secondly, they hid liquid crystal narcotics in the bodies of vehicles entering the country.

However, their plans were thwarted by the police and led to the modification of some procedures in customs clearance operations for goods in cooperation with the country’s customs authorities. This cooperative effort emphasizes the efforts of interested agencies in the country to combat narcotics and limit the spread of this scourge in the community.

The Director of the Narcotics Administration stated that Sharjah Police will continue to proactively target people involved in drug trafficking. The force remains alert and adopts the latest methods and techniques to combat organized crime.

Sharjah Police urged community members, particularly youth, to help protect society against drug infiltration by reporting suspected cases and calling 8004654 or emailing dea@shjpolice.gov ae.
