United Arab Emirates: New letter released to regulate fatwas in the country – News

A letter, the first of its kind, was presented in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday, highlighting the need to consolidate efforts to issue Islamic resolutions. The Abu Dhabi Charter for Scientific Development was launched by Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Tolerance and Coexistence, during the Second International Conference of the UAE Fatwa Council.

The letter is addressed to fatwa institutions and bodies that specialize in fatwa and sharia. It promotes the need to consolidate efforts, exchange knowledge and the identification and formulation of the most precise possible perceptions about scientific advances, with a view to achieving a religiously correct and balanced conceptualization that corresponds to the challenges and changes of today’s world.

The two-day conference has brought together experts from around the world to discuss and debate various topics, including artificial intelligence, space exploration, sustainability and surrogacy.

A timely document

According to senior officials, the document is timely and responds directly to the challenges and innovations that have emerged in recent times.

Abdullah bin Bayyah, Chairman of the UAE Fatwa Council, explained that the charter is based on the UAE’s national vision in line with initiatives in 2023, the Year of Sustainability. He called it “a response to the emergence of new inventions and discoveries, to the current rapid digital development that causes a paradigm shift in various areas of life, such as health, economics, space sciences, energy, climate, agriculture and artificial intelligence, and address questions that arise about the Shari’a provisions relating to those changes, as there is no reference text or previous examples to be used in measurement and jurisprudence.”

Dr. Omar Habtoor Al-Darei, director general of the UAE Fatwa Council, said the letter is a starting point in the process of linking scientific developments with Shari’a principles and values, finding appropriate solutions , propose appropriate formulas and an effective methodology. to deal with developments, while maintaining compliance with Shari’a and Fiqh.

“The letter provides an academic reference and a specific framework and approaches to manage the fatwa regarding scientific advances and the rules and methods used to address them,” he said.[It is] based on the essence of conceptualizing such developments, which includes inclusion, jurisprudence, extrapolation and integration, through the exploration of Shari’a, scientific considerations, necessary determinants, adaptation of modern applications and maintaining sustainability based on the principles of Fiqh and Shari’a that require extensive efforts to pave the way for positive interaction with new cosmic science and knowledge.”

The UAE Fatwa Council was established in the UAE to be the only body authorized to issue general Sharia’a fatwas in the country.
