A handwritten calligraphic Holy Quran weighing more than 30 kilos attracts attention at the 42nd Sharjah International Book Fair (SIBF).

Jaleena, who spent more than a year working on the one-of-a-kind edition containing all 114 surahs spread across 604 pages, says this was her way of paying homage to Islam’s most sacred writings.

“I always wanted to memorize the Quran and I had never had the opportunity to do so before. So I got involved in writing it using calligraphy, something I also had to learn from scratch,” says the 46-year-old from the southern Indian state of Kerala.

“And it soon became a passion as I began to enjoy my combined pursuit of knowledge, art and spiritual achievement,” he adds.

Jaleena, who once worked on a rubber plantation and taught Urdu to schoolchildren to make ends meet, now wants to focus on her newfound love for calligraphy, especially after being recognized by entities such as Arabian World Records and the India and Asia Book of. Records.

“These [awards and recognitions] They mean a lot to me personally, but the biggest encouragement for me came from the visitors to the festival,” says the mother of one of those who has been displaying the book in Hall 7 of the Sharjah Exhibition Centre, where the 12-day festival until November. 12.

“His great love and affection for me and his great interest in art and all the hard work that went into it shows how much people here value creativity,” adds Jaleena, who was helped by her husband and son, final year medical student. she student, putting the finishing touches on the Holy Quran which was written on ivory cards and comes with a teak wood casting. “Even the design of the cover of the Holy Quran is mine and it was so intricate that it finally had to be carved by a carpenter,” says the artist who is not willing to put a price on her masterpiece. “It’s probably not for sale at the moment because it’s priceless to me and I’d like to keep it for myself and my family.”

With a volume of 28.5 x 22.5 x 4.5 inches, the book weighs 54 kg along with its cover, which is completely handmade.
