Are you traveling during the Union Day holidays? Keep an eye out for yellow and white taxis plying the streets of Abu Dhabi. Yes, the iconic taxis of the 1980s are making a comeback with modern facilities. And up to 100 taxis operate on the continent, said an official from the Integrated Transportation Center (CTI) of the Department of Municipalities and Transportation.
“This yellow and white color was the trademark of taxis a long time ago. We will bring it back as part of the 52nd Union Day celebrations,” Ateeq Al Mazrouei, director of the Planning Department of the Integrated Transport Center (ITC), told Khaleej Times, while showing a fleet of hybrid taxis sporting the stickers of yellow and white color. .
Aside from the yellow and white color branding, other features and specifications remain the same as the existing silver cabs.
Al Mazrouei noted that the initiative is an opportunity for people who used to travel in those taxis to relive their old memories and for the new generation to take a look at the past.
“These taxis are a reminder of the changes that have occurred from the past to the present. In the 90s, the service was very basic. Now you can book your taxis through an app or call center, pay money through alternative ways like cards and apps, and more facilities,” he said while remembering his taxi rides in the 90s.
Al Mazrouei said there are around 100 yellow and white taxis operating on the streets of the mainland, and also at the Sheikh Zayed Festival.
“Currently we only have 100 taxis. We have a QR code inside the taxis to carry out a survey. We will receive feedback from our passengers. You can also contact our call center at 600 53 53 53 to give your opinion. And depending on their feedback, we will decide whether or not to expand the fleet or simply stay with 100 taxis,” Al Mazrouei added.
The old yellow and white taxis are already turning heads on the streets among a flurry of new-age silver taxis.
“I remember traveling in old taxis. They had a manually operated meter. We could share taxis and travel from point A to B for a few dirhams. But taxis are now better organized and offer many facilities. That’s why I like the color yellow and white and fortunately it comes with all new facilities,” said Zeyad Masri, a long-time Arab resident.
“This looks beautiful. I will surely take a ride in these,” said Abubakar Sesay, another expat.
