Breaking multiple traffic rules in less than three seconds, a reckless driver in Abu Dhabi caused a horrific accident at a busy intersection in the emirate.

In a shocking video that Abu Dhabi police shared on Friday, a black SUV is seen taking a wrong turn and then running a red light. The result? He collided with another vehicle which caused him to lose control.

The clip clearly showed what went wrong: First, the SUV was in a lane marked “go straight,” but turned left. Second, he turned when the light was red, which meant vehicles on the other side of the road were crossing the intersection.

Although multiple violations can be seen in the video, Abu Dhabi Police said distracted driving was the main reason for the accident.

“The driver was not focused on the road and appeared to have been preoccupied with other things,” the authority said.

“Distracted driving, which often involves using the phone, browsing social media, making a call or taking photos, leads to serious consequences and accidents.” This is a traffic violation punishable by a fine of 800 dirhams and four black points.

The driver in the video also ran a red light, another violation that carries a fine of Dh1,000, 12 black points and confiscation of the vehicle for 30 days. To release the SUV, the driver will have to pay a fine of Dh50,000, according to Abu Dhabi traffic regulations.

If the owner does not pay the fine within three months, the vehicle will be auctioned.

Abu Dhabi Police urged all drivers to always keep their eyes on the road and pay attention to pedestrians and traffic signs.
