Shops at Al Mulla Plaza remained closed on Sunday after a part of the mall collapsed the previous night. Two people suffered minor injuries in the accident.

One of the oldest shopping malls in Dubai, the building features retail stores and an apartment block above them. The apartments were not affected by the incident and the tenants were able to return to their homes. Dubai police have cordoned off retail stores.

When Khaleej Times visited the plaza on Sunday, we found many shoppers who had come to the mall as usual, unaware of the mishap. No one was allowed entry and officials were seen inspecting the structure located on Al Ittihad Road.

A security guard stationed in front of the popular monument asked visitors to return a few days later while authorities ensured security.

A popular landmark, Al Mulla Plaza is a mixed-use center housing 108 duplexes and 60 retail outlets.

“For us (residents) there is no problem because the plaster on the ceiling simply collapsed. A family decided to move to a hotel for a day, but the overall situation was under control as it was a minor problem. There is no concern as such among the residents,” said I. John, a long-time resident of Al Mulla Plaza.

A rear access door remains open for residents of the apartment block.

“We found out about the incident yesterday afternoon when we returned home and saw that the front of the building was cordoned off. But everyone is calm and going about their routines,” said MS, an Indian national who moved into the building about two years ago with his family.

He said residents have access to water and electricity.

Citing police, the Dubai Government Media Office said on Sunday that authorities took “prompt measures to manage the situation arising from the collapse of a small part of Al Mulla Plaza last night.”

“The incident, caused by improper storage of heavy materials, caused minor injuries to two people. “Government departments responded quickly to ensure the safety of everyone, including workers and visitors.”
