A new survey will be launched in 2024 to help assess household spending levels within the emirate of Abu Dhabi.

It also aims to shed light on the distribution of individuals and families in various categories of income and expenses.

Hanan Ali Al Marzouqi, Director of the Field Survey Department, also highlighted that this ‘Household Income and Expenditure Survey’ is part of a larger national survey that aims to periodically collect data on households, focusing on household traits. demographics and families.

Marzouqi said: “We want to see the cost of living for different income categories in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and Al Dhafra. We want to understand the size of Emirati and non-Emirati households and what they spend on. This includes different income groups from the low, moderate, upper moderate and high income segments.”

Poverty indicators

He also emphasizes that another outcome will involve indicators related to poverty, which is a new metric this year.

“One of the results will be poverty indicators. This is a new indicator. How could we address the challenges of poverty in Abu Dhabi?”

“Additional indicators cover economic factors and the Consumer Price Index (CPI) in Abu Dhabi, aimed at evaluating the commodities used and determining their suitability for future needs.”

The Abu Dhabi Statistics Center, in cooperation with the Ministry of Community Development and the Federal Center for Statistics and Competitiveness (FCSC), conducts this survey every five years.

The target sample of this survey across the UAE is 19,000 families. In Abu Dhabi alone, the survey aims to collect data from around 11,000 households in 260 areas, averaging 850 households per month.

This will be within a sample that includes 70 percent Emirati households and 30 percent non-Emirati households, with 252 field researchers participating in this study.

Improving quality of life

Marzouqi noted that the database will serve as indicative information for the country’s legislative body and will have importance for executive government agencies seeking to improve the quality of life.

Examples of indicators measured by the survey include average spending on goods and services, special data on the income of families and individuals in the capital, which provide the data necessary to construct the CPI baskets and their estimated weight classes.

Other criteria include providing data on the individual’s calorie consumption-related food budget and calculating various poverty indicators, including poverty lines, ratios, and gaps.

And he added: “Within these classifications, several items are identified. These include essential expenses such as rice, flour, meat and chicken. Analyzing spending patterns across various households will help the government understand the specific spending associated with each of these items.”

This survey will be extended to the labor camps to examine how workers allocate their income.

“Their goal is to determine whether funds are being sent to their home countries and whether current income is sufficient for their needs. These findings are crucial to evaluate and improve overall quality of life,” Marzouqi said.

The Household Income and Expenditure Survey is one of the largest and most comprehensive surveys in the world.

By calculating average income from individual and family expenses, the survey helps identify influencing factors such as education, profession, economic activity, and demographic, social, and economic variables.

Abdulla Gharib Alqemzi, acting director general of the Statistics Centre, said: “The data collected also serves to support relevant projects, establish relationships and estimate national accounts related to income and consumption.”
