ABU DHABI: The President, His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, in his capacity as Ruler of Abu Dhabi, has issued a law establishing the Abu Dhabi Hazardous Materials Management Centre, which will operate under the authority of the Headquarters of the Abu Dhabi Police.
The center aims to develop an integrated ecosystem to improve the effective management of hazardous materials in Abu Dhabi, aligning with global best practices and ensuring the implementation of the highest environmental and community safety and protection measures.
The functions and responsibilities of the Abu Dhabi Hazardous Materials Management Center include the development and implementation of overall policies and strategic plans to ensure the integrated application of regulations and standards related to hazardous materials throughout the emirate. The center will also supervise and monitor the activities of various sectors and relevant local entities that handle and manage hazardous materials, ensuring compliance with legislation.
Additionally, the center’s functions include establishing a dedicated central operations room to track and monitor hazardous materials; develop mechanisms for the management of confiscated hazardous materials to ensure their safe handling and storage until final disposal; create and develop a dedicated electronic system to enable self-disclosure and reporting of all hazardous materials related data in Abu Dhabi; create a database for hazardous materials; and conduct scientific studies and research on hazardous materials, in collaboration with relevant authorities and stakeholders.
