UAE organ donation program growing fastest in the world

Dubai: The United Arab Emirates has achieved 417 percent growth over the past five years in the number of post-death organ donors per million population, becoming the world’s fastest growing organ donation programme, The Emirates News Agency (WAM) reported on Saturday.
The figure from ‘Hayat’, the National Program for Donation and Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues, which is under the Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP), was announced on the sidelines of the UAE Organ Donation and Transplantation Congress, four-day event, which began on Saturday in Dubai.
The growth has been affirmed by the International Society for Organ Donation and Procurement (ISODP).
Recent data from Hayat shows that around 14,602 people have registered for the program, 4,000 patients are on donor waiting lists, there have been 160 donors since 2017 and a total of 460 organ transplants have been performed, including 111 since the beginning of 2023. .
Since 2017, the Hayat program has received tens of thousands of pledges and 582 organs transplanted, including 328 kidney, 199 liver, 16 heart, 26 lung and 13 pancreas transplants.
More than 52 different nationalities have participated and reaped the benefits of the program.

In addition, the event will review experiences from certain countries and delve into the latest technological advances in organ donation and transplantation and will feature debates on cutting-edge innovations such as perfusion machines, organ recipient identification systems and various aspects of after-care. transplant.

Abdullah Ahmed Ahli, acting deputy undersecretary for the support services sector at MoHAP, said that MoHAP, together with other health authorities, is interested in fostering a culture of organ donation within the community by launching community campaigns and organization of international conferences and events.
“We will spare no efforts to develop sustainable solutions for patients suffering from various critical conditions such as cancer, heart disease, lung failure, cirrhosis and kidney failure,” Ahli added.
He highlighted that organ transplantation not only offers a path to full recovery but also significantly improves the quality of life of recipients.
