RTA runs five government innovation labs on artificial intelligence, circular economy and road safety

During the second half of 2023, Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) hosted five innovation labs at its Mobility Research and Innovation Center located at the University of Birmingham in Dubai.

The laboratories included activities related to the Traffic and Road Agency, the Railway Agency and the Corporate Administrative Support Services sector, in addition to the Public Transport Agency and the Corporate Technology Support Services Sector.

Road Safety and Artificial Intelligence

The innovation laboratory of the Roads and Traffic Agency shed light on the importance of improving traffic safety in the field of motorcycle delivery services, as well as the safety of users of electric bicycles and scooters, in addition to promoting pedestrian safety.”

Circular economy

The Corporate Administrative Support Services Sector laboratory focused on the circular economy and RTAEfforts and initiatives to recycle waste paper and plastic cards. The installation of green chargers aimed at reducing carbon dioxide emissions and the implementation of the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) system in all buildings and facilities of the company were also addressed. Finding solutions

The Public Transport Agency’s lab was an interactive brainstorming session aimed at finding solutions to four challenges: bus schedule compliance, school bus schedules, fine collection and asset management.

The bus schedule brainstorming session focused on identifying challenges and solutions. These solutions included time management and scheduling based on occupancy levels, streamlining ticket validation, improving data sharing with partners, and improving demand management. The School Bus Schedule Lab reviewed solutions such as improving governance, scheduling, and integration systems between RTA and operators.

Regarding asset management, various solutions were presented, such as employing technology for continuous monitoring of assets through alert notifications, providing adequate training to employees to ensure compliance with security systems and tools at the workplace job.
