Ramadan 2024: Sale and display of Iftar snacks banned outside shops without permission in Sharjah – News

Shops and restaurants planning to prepare and sell food during the day during Ramadan must obtain permits from the Sharjah City Municipality. The Islamic holy month is scheduled to begin on Tuesday, March 12, according to the latest astronomical calculations, and is expected to span the full 30 days.

On Tuesday, the authority announced the start of issuing the necessary permits for food establishments. This regulation also extends to food establishments located within shopping centers and malls.

According to Sharjah Municipality, permits are required to display food outside shops before iftar time, applicable to restaurants, cafes, sweet shops and pastry shops.

There are two types of permits: one for displaying food during the day for preparation purposes and another for displaying snacks in front of restaurants just before iftar. The conditions that food establishments must meet are the following:

Permit for the preparation and sale of food during the day:

  • Permit issuance fee: 3,000 dirhams.
  • Food must be served off site.
  • It is not allowed to receive clients in the dining room.
  • The preparation and cooking of food is only allowed inside the kitchens.

Permission to display food for sale outside shops before iftar:

  • Permit issuance fee: 500 dirhams
  • Food should be displayed on the front sidewalk (as long as it is not sandy).
  • Food should be placed in non-corrosive metal containers and displayed in a glass box (not less than 100 cm) with a sliding or hinged door.
  • Food should be covered with food-grade aluminum foil or clear plastic, using food-grade packaging materials.
  • Food should be stored at an appropriate temperature (neither refrigerated nor frozen).
  • The exposed foods must be prepared in the establishment according to its permitted activity.
