Dubai’s taxi sector has seen substantial growth in 2023, recording around 114 million trips, in the process lifting around 198.4 million passengers throughout the year. This annual trip count is the highest recorded in the last 15 years.
Highlighting the achievements of the Taxi sector, Adel Shakri, Director of Planning and Business Development, Public Transport Agency, Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), saying,
“The annual growth rate of taxi trips between 2022 and 2023 was up to 8%, underscoring the key role of the sector in Dubai’s public transport network. In October 2023, there was an unprecedented increase: taxi trips reached 10 million. Known for their extensive coverage, Dubai taxis travel an average of more than 500 kilometers every 24 hours.”
Shakri was pleased with this enormous growth in taxi trips, attributing it to the deep trust placed by residents, tourists and visitors in the taxi services managed under the auspices of the RTA.
In 2023, 1,160 taxis were deployed to bolster the city’s taxi fleet, bringing the total to approximately 12,532 vehicles. It is worth noting that 10,388 of these taxis are environmentally friendly and comprise a combination of hybrid and electric vehicles, representing 83% of the entire fleet. These taxis are operated by 27,900 drivers who work in two shifts.
The electronic taxi service (Halah Taxi) reported a significant rebound with 39.8 million trips made in 2023, representing 27% growth over 2022. This increase underlines the broad and rapid shift in consumer behavior from traditional street calls to electronic bookings throughout the year.
Furthermore, the efficiency of halaDubai’s service saw a notable improvement: the average actual arrival time for electronically booked taxis reaching customers in Dubai fell to 3.6 minutes in 2023, an improvement from the 3.9 minutes recorded in 2022.
