The rail extension will also pass through “vital facilities and landmarks and population centers in Sharjah”, according to a report by state agency Wam.
“This step improves the connection between the residential communities of the Emirates and makes it easier for passengers to travel between the stations of the network, taking into account that Sharjah connects Dubai with the other northern emirates,” said Sheikh Theyab bin Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Etihad Rail Company, who attended the launch with the Sharjah Ruler.
The announcement is part of the UAE’s vision to develop passenger trains and connect cities and population centers in the country through a safe, reliable and efficient network.
Currently under construction, the UAE’s national railway network spans 900 kilometres. Once completed, the passenger rail services will connect 11 cities and regions across the country, from Al Sila to Fujairah, including Al Ruwais, Al Mirfa, Fujairah, Sharjah, Al Dhaid, Abu Dhabi and Dubai.
