After heavy rain hit the United Arab Emirates over the weekend, something unusual appeared in Sharjah: car license plates were sticking out of the sidewalks.

Found along the emirate’s Al Khan junction and Jamal Abdul Nasir Street, these plates likely belong to motorists who had to speed through the floods.

Sharjah Municipality teams worked day and night clearing roads and removing dozens of license plates from ponds of water.

They placed them on the edge of the road and, to make the plaques visible, the workers glued them between the blocks that formed the walkways:

On Jamal Abdul Nasir Street, the plaques were placed on the grass next to the road:

On Monday, many residents were seen checking the screen for their missing license plates.

Nepalese national Raju Kumal stopped at Al Khan Interchange on Monday afternoon to look for the front license plate of his four-wheeler, which he lost when he went through knee-deep water a day earlier.

“I think my car’s license plate fell off here yesterday when I sped through the pond of water because I was worried that water would leak into my car and get stuck in the water,” Kumal said. Khaleej Times.

Although the Al Khan crossing was mostly clear, Jamal Abdul Nasir Street was still flooded on Tuesday morning. Trucks were seen running non-stop to clean the water.

Fines, sanctions

In Dubai, driving without a license plate or with a damaged one can land drivers hefty fines of up to Dh3,000 and a whopping 23 black points.

Motorists can request a lost certificate through the Dubai Police app by sending a letter in Arabic from a company or institution with details of the lost license plate, Emirates ID, email address, passport and other details.

The applicant will have to pay Dh70 for service and knowledge fees and an additional Dh100 if he submits the application in person through the service center.
