Residents of the United Arab Emirates will enjoy up to nine days off to celebrate the Islamic festival Eid Al Fitr. The UAE Cabinet announced on Sunday that federal government employees will have a week-long holiday starting on Monday, April 8. Together with the weekend from Saturday to Sunday, this is a nine-day break. For government employees, the holiday does not depend on when the Moon is sighted.

However, private sector employees could enjoy a vacation that would last nine or six days, depending on when the Moon is sighted and whether Ramadan lasts 29 or 30 days.

This is everything you need to know about the longest vacation of the year.

When is Eid Al Fitr 2024?

Like all months of the Islamic Hijri calendar, Ramadan lasts 29 or 30 days depending on when the crescent moon is seen in the night sky. Eid Al Fitr is celebrated on the first of Shawwal, the month after Ramadan. This year’s Eid will fall on April 9 or 10. If Ramadan lasts 30 days, Eid will be April 10; and if it is 29 days, the Islamic holiday is April 9.

Does the Eid holiday start before the festival?

Yes. This is because the Eid holiday begins on Ramadan 29. In the Gregorian calendar, it is Monday, April 8. The holiday begins on this date regardless of when the Moon is observed for public and private sector employees.

Will employees get a 9-day break regardless of when the Moon is observed?

>> Government Employees: Taking into account the Saturday-Sunday weekend preceding April 8, federal government employees have a nine-day break. Therefore, the holiday is from Saturday, April 6 to Sunday, April 14. They will report to work again on Monday, April 15.

>> Private sector employees:

– If Ramadan lasts 30 days: the Eid break is from Monday, April 8 (Ramadan 29) to Friday, April 12 (Shawwal 3). With the weekends from Saturday to Sunday before and after the break, there are a total of nine days off. The recess then is from Saturday, April 6 to Sunday, April 14.

– If Ramadan lasts 29 days: If this is the case, residents will have six days off, including the weekend. The Eid break will be from Monday, April 8 (Ramadan 29) to Thursday, April 11. If you include the weekend from Saturday to Sunday before the break, that’s a total of six days off. The recess then is from Saturday, April 6 to Thursday, April 11.

Does this mean that Muslims will fast during the break?

If Ramadan lasts the full 30 days, Muslims would fast for the first two days of the break. If it lasts 29 days, they will observe the fast on the first day of the festival.
