“I was returning from Taraweeh prayers when I saw thick smoke rising from the upper floors of the neighboring building. At first, I thought it was the tower I resided in. When I reached the building, I saw that there were many people on the streets. ”said one resident.
“Around 9:45 p.m. I saw the emergency services enter the neighborhood to put out the flames and take control of the situation,” the resident added.
“Residents of other blocks were also evacuated as a precautionary measure.”
According to residents, the Sharjah Civil Defense Department sent several firefighting teams to deal with the situation as thick smoke covered the area.
Many residents did not see the fire, “as the only thing visible was the thick smoke,” said Shahid, a shopkeeper in the surrounding area.
“He was not aware of the situation and was absorbed in work. Around 10 pm, the entire street was full of people and that’s when I came to know about the fire,” Shahid said, adding that the building should have been evacuated around 10:30 pm.
