Starting April 15, Dubai Metro passengers will no longer have to change trains at Jabal Ali station when the new Y-junction begins operations. But how will this change the way we travel? Will there be separate entry points?

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) announced the new Dubai Metro Red Line route earlier this week, a development that comes as a relief to many commuters.

Dubai resident Kurt Cervales, who takes the train from Ibn Battuta Station to Sobha Realty Station every day, always has to stop at Jabal Ali, which is just one stop from his boarding point.

“Honestly, that’s something I fear every time I ride the Metro. I can’t be calm every time I get on the train at Ibn Battuta because, after a few minutes, I would have to get off again,” Cervales said.

The new Y junction would solve this problem, according to the RTA.

Here’s what will change and how the new crossing will work:

1. Not all trains will go to Expo 2020

Previously, All Red Line trains from Centrepoint station go directly to Expo 2020 station and pass through stops such as The Gardens, Discovery Gardens, Jumeirah Golf Estates and Furjan.

Those heading to a destination between Ibn Battuta and UAE Exchange will have to stop at the Jabal Ali junction. This will no longer be the case.

2. There will now be two service routes.

With the Y-junction, the Red Line will now have two service routes: the first will go to the Expo 2020 station and the second to the UAE Exchange station. (See blue and teal train icons below.)

3. Trains will run alternately

These two trains will run one after the other, so travelers will have to pay attention to the digital screens and signs and listen carefully to announcements at the station to ensure they are boarding the correct train.

These new service routes are expected to reduce travel on the Dubai Metro and help passengers enjoy a hassle-free journey.

“(The new system) would greatly reduce crowding at stations and waiting times, improving the travel experience for passengers. Additionally, the initiative would save energy due to fewer train kilometers, lower energy consumption during the routes and the least number of trains needed to run. “, said Hassan Al Mutawa, director of railway operations at RTA, during the launch of the project.
