UAE Fatwa Council confirms permissibility of giving Zakat Al Fitr in cash

In a statement before Eid Al Fitr, the Council explained that Zakat Al Fitr is obligatory, according to the hadith of Ibn Omar: “The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) has made Sadaqat Al Fitr obligatory, (and it was), since be it a Sa’ of barley or a Sa’ of dates.”
The UAE Fatwa Council stated that Zakat Al Fitr is equivalent to 2.5 kilograms of rice per person and can be done in kind (like rice) or in cash.
