The project is overseen by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Dubai Executive Council.

Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the Roads and Transport Authority, Mattar Al Tayer, said: “The Al Khaleej Street Tunnel is part of the Al Shindagha Corridor Improvement Project; one of the great projects currently undertaken by RTA.”

The Al Khaleej Street project is part of Phase 4 of the Al Shindagha Corridor Improvement Project.

Al Khaleej Street Tunnel Scope

  • Free traffic flow from Infinity Bridge to Deira and vice versa.
  • Transform the intersection of Cairo and Al Wuheida streets from a roundabout to a signalized intersection.
  • Improve Cairo Street and connect the bridge ramp from Dubai Islands with the new tunnel on Al Khaleej Street to the north.

Al Shindagha Corridor Improvement Project

This corridor extends 13 km along Sheikh Rashid Road, Al Mina Street, Al Khaleej Street and Cairo Street, encompassing the improvement of 15 intersections and benefiting numerous residential and developing communities, including Dubai Islands, Dubai Waterfront, Dubai Maritime City and Mina Rashid.

It serves around one million people and is projected to reduce travel times from 104 minutes to just 16 minutes by 2030.

In progress

“RTA is currently working on a 4.8 kilometer improvement project on Sheikh Rashid Street, which extends from the Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Street intersection to the Falcon intersection on Al Mina Street.

The project involves the construction of three bridges with a total length of 3.1 kilometers and with capacity for 19,400 vehicles per hour in all lanes.

The first is a 1,335 meter three-lane bridge to facilitate traffic flow between Sheikh Rashid Road and Falcon Intersection, with capacity for 10,800 vehicles per hour in both directions.

The second is a three-lane bridge that extends 780 meters to serve traffic from Falcon Intersection towards Al Wasl Road and with capacity for 5,400 vehicles per hour.

The third is a 985-meter-long two-lane bridge to serve incoming traffic from Jumeirah Street in the direction of Al Mina Street towards Al Wasl Street, with a capacity of 3,200 vehicles per hour,” Al Tayer said.

“The project also involves the construction of a 4.8 kilometer road and the improvement of surface junctions along Jumeirah, Al Mina and Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah roads. The works include the construction of two pedestrian bridges, one on Sheikh Rashid Road and another on Al Mina Street, in addition to other works such as street lighting, traffic systems, stormwater drainage network and irrigation systems,” he added.
