Dh400 fine and “minimum speed” in both directions on Abu Dhabi’s main highway

The ‘minimum speed’ of 120 km/h, implemented on Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Highway in April 2023, applies to traffic in both directions, Abu Dhabi Police clarified on Monday, January 29.

The maximum speed allowed on the highway is 140 kilometers per hourand the minimum speed of 120 kilometers per hour It specifically applies to drivers using the two express lanes (the first and second lanes from the left).

Drivers who violate the “minimum speed” rule will be subject to a fine for “driving a vehicle at a speed less than the minimum speed limit of the highway.” The police reminded that violators will face a fine of 400 dirhams.

However, the “minimum speed” rule does not apply to the third and final lane.

Drivers traveling at a slower pace will be able to use the third lane without any restrictions. Police highlighted that heavy vehicles, which are expected to use the last lane of the road, are exempt from the minimum speed rule.

The objective of activating the minimum speed is to improve the safety of drivers. It forces slow moving vehicles to travel in the right lanes and yield to priority vehicles approaching from behind or from the left. This measure is designed to promote safer and more efficient traffic flow on the road.

Police reminded drivers to use caution and refrain from changing lanes unless they made sure the road was clear. Drivers are advised to change lanes only when there is sufficient distance between their vehicle and others to allow safe movement into the intended lanes. Police also stressed the importance of using indicators when changing lanes.
