Saif Al Suwaidi, Director General of the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), He said the UAE plays a pioneering role in the aviation sector’s climate change agenda both regionally and globally, especially as a member of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

In his statement, Al-Suwaidi stated that the UAE is one of the first countries in the region to recognize the importance of addressing this vital issue, especially as the aviation sector plays a key role in addressing the challenge of climate change and is a cornerstone of the Emirati economy. , contributing more than 13 percent of the country’s gross domestic product (GDP), with an expected increase of 170 percent in the next twenty years, and also providing some 777,000 jobs in the country’s markets.

Therefore, the sector’s growth must be sustainable and low-carbon to achieve the country’s ambitious climate goals, he added.

The UAE’s hosting of the Third Conference on Alternative Aviation Fuels (CAAF/3) is a testament to its leadership in this field, as the event is the largest international gathering of leaders, manufacturers, investors and experts of the aviation sector in industries related to low consumption fuels. carbon aviation fuels and sustainable fuels, he further added.

It stated that the international aviation industry is responsible for around 2 percent of global carbon emissions, and this figure is expected to increase as demand for air travel continues to grow. This is why the issue of aviation fuel is a key focus of international efforts to address climate change.

Finding effective strategies to mitigate the environmental impact of the aviation sector is more critical than ever. The decisions resulting from the conference will bring about real change in the future of the civil aviation sector, concluded Al Suwaidi.

ICAO will convene the third Conference on Aviation and Alternative Fuels (CAAF/3) in Dubai, UAE, from 20 to 24 November 2023. The conference will bring together high-level officials from States, as well as international organizations with direct participation on cleaner energy for aviation, to review progress in the development and deployment of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF), low carbon aviation fuel (LCAF) and other cleaner energy sources for aviation.

CAAF/3 will also define a global ICAO framework for sustainable aviation fuels that is aligned with the No Country Left Behind (NCLB) initiative and takes into account national circumstances and capabilities.
