Abu Dhabi Municipality launches awareness campaign explaining dos and don’ts

As the cold weather arrives, outdoor seating has started to appear, but before arranging it outdoor Restaurant and cafe owners are reminded that there are rules in place. Violators will be fined up to 5,000 dirhams, according to the Abu Dhabi City Municipality.

Permits are required to establish temporary outdoor seating areas near commercial establishments, including shops, restaurants, cafes and other places of service, the municipality said as it launched a campaign to keep the public informed.

Fees must also be paid and certain operating guidelines and procedures followed, with an emphasis on maintaining cleanliness.

The municipality has established a series of requirements:

  • Business owners can submit permit applications through the TAMM platform, as long as they have the consent of the building owner and a valid lease of at least six months.
  • The Municipal City Center will evaluate the proposed dimensions for outdoor seating and determine the corresponding fees.
  • The outdoor seating permit fee is calculated based on the space required and includes a refundable deposit of Dh10,000.
  • The permits issued are valid for one year, with the option to renew.
  • The municipality reserves the right to revoke the permit if the terms are violated or if urban development requires it, without liability for possible losses to the permit holder.
  • A detailed layout plan must be submitted specifying the arrangement of tables, chairs and shading devices in accordance with established guidelines.

Unauthorized establishment of an outdoor seating area carries a fine of Dh5,000, while violation of permit conditions results in a fine of Dh3,000, the authority added.

Abu Dhabi City Municipality, in partnership with the city’s Municipal Centre, launched a campaign aimed at improving public awareness and understanding of these rules on the temporary installation of outdoor seating areas.
