Community and humanitarian work carried out by the Ismaili community was highlighted at a high-profile meeting attended by many diplomats and senior members of the community at the Ismaili Center in Dubai on Thursday.

Aziz Merchant, Chairman of His Highness Aga Khan’s Shia Imami Ismaili Council for the United Arab Emirates; Tracy Reynolds, Consul General of Canada in Dubai; The meeting was attended by Nicoleta Teodorovici, Consul General of Romania in Dubai, and many other diplomats and high-ranking members of the Ismaili community.

Akbar Verjee, head of diplomatic relations at the Dubai Ismaili Centre, delivered the welcome note and Aziz Merchant delivered the keynote address. Tracy Reynolds and Nicoleta Teodorovici also addressed attendees, highlighting the key role the Ismaili community plays in their respective countries.

Aziz Merchant also highlighted the role played by the Aga Khan Development Network, a non-profit organisation, in various fields in many countries over many decades.

“We work very closely with members of the various diplomatic missions here because the Aga Khan Development Network has a presence in more than 30 countries. That is why it makes sense to maintain relations with the representatives of the countries here. The Ismaili Center in Dubai can also host events through joint programming without any commercial element. We work together wherever the DNA matches, be it cultural, educational or any other field,” Merchant told Khaleej Times in an interview on Thursday.

The Aga Khan Development Network, which employs more than 90,000 people and has more than 200,000 volunteers worldwide, runs hospitals, schools and early childhood centers, as well as helping to improve the quality of life of people in remote areas. and mountainous.

It is estimated that approximately 5,000 members of the Ismaili community have made the UAE their home and work in high-profile professions and businesses.

Corinne Glauser, director of the Aga Khan Early Learning Center in Dubai, adjacent to the Ismaili Centre, informed the audience about the non-profit nursery that teaches the British curriculum and has won numerous awards. The nursery, equipped with a large library and an indoor gym, among other amenities, houses 45 children and is open to all nationalities and communities.

Tracy Reynolds also highlighted the important role played in Canada through its many community centers over the decades. There are approximately more than 8,000 members of the Ismaili community who call Canada their home.
