In a rich display of Islamic heritage, the Sharjah International Book Festival showcases a meticulously crafted replica of the Golden Quran that has become the center of attention of the event.

This exhibit is a rare replica of an original manuscript dating to the 11th or 12th century and is the masterpiece of Ibn al-Bawwab, a renowned Persian illuminator and calligrapher of the early 11th century.

The original manuscript is preserved in the Bavarian State Library in Munich, and is a limited edition of only ten copies produced during its time. The replica, one of 300 printed in the exact size, style and visual appeal of the ancient codex, will be on display at the event.

“This Quran is a true work of art, featuring a sacred text inscribed in black Naskh cursive script on gold-coated paper,” said exhibitor Florian Strulz, representing Adeva Rare Collectibles.

“The manuscript has decorations that go beyond fantasy and is unique in the world of manuscript art.”

Each surah title (chapter) is elegantly written in blue, white and reddish-brown script, with intricate floral patterns and arabesques and rosettes in blue and silver separating the verses.

“The size of the letters is based on mathematical principles, with the size of ‘alif’ (Arabic letter) being the scale unit. The first letter of the Arabic alphabet on which the size of all other letters is based,” Strulz said.

Originating in Iraq or Iran during the rule of the Seljuk Turks, the original Quran is made of colors including white, brown, crimson and black, and is written by the skillful hands of Ibn al-Bawwab.

“The vertical letters, slightly inclined to the left, are carefully arranged, showing a distinctive style characteristic of the school of Ibn al-Bawwab,” Strulz said.

“A notable feature of the first page is the unique arrangement of two surah titles, making this Quran a distinctive work of art,” Strulz said.

On the ‘bismillah’, the Arabic phrase that translates as ‘In the name of Allah, the most merciful and most merciful’, the elongated Arabic letter ‘seen’ adds a touch of the school’s distinctive style to this rare and revered Koran. .
