COP28 in Dubai: Nature, Land Use and Oceans Day sees commitments worth more than $186 million – News

During COP28’s Nature, Land Use and Ocean Day, more than $186 million in new nature and climate finance was announced for forests, mangroves and the ocean. This funding is in addition to the $2.5 billion mobilized to protect and restore nature during the COP28 World Climate Action Summit (WCAS) on December 2.

These commitments prioritized the protection of forests, the expansion of mangroves and green spaces, and reinforced financing for nature conservation and ocean sustainability. The leaders emphasized the urgency of taking immediate steps to safeguard nature as a cornerstone to achieving the goals of the Paris Agreement.

“There is no path to meeting the Paris Agreement and keeping 1.5°C within reach without protecting and restoring nature, land and ocean. We must work in partnership, especially with the indigenous peoples and local communities who manage these critical assets”. said Razan Al Mubarak, UN high-level advocate on climate change for COP28.

“The diverse and incredible participation in the Nature, Land Use and Oceans Day at the COP evidences the support for this dual nature-climate agenda and its centrality in the response to the Global Balance. I am delighted that we also have a clear path through nature to COP30 in Belém,” he added.

“The COP28 presidency, the United Arab Emirates, has demonstrated real action for nature, backed by significant financial commitments. The journey towards 1.5, as we all know, is not possible without nature, and this level action must be accelerated to achieve real progress by COP30,” said Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, President of the Republic of Ghana.
