A school bus accident that occurred on Thursday morning in Sharjah resulted in minor injuries to three students and two supervisors.

According to Sharjah Police, the accident occurred when the school bus took a sudden turn, swerved and crashed into the pavement.

The injured were taken to a hospital for treatment. The police have assured the parents of the private school that their children are safe and healthy after the accident.

The authority highlighted the importance of careful driving of school buses and the need to respect traffic rules.

School buses in the United Arab Emirates have a strict set of rules and regulations they must follow, and authorities often conduct extensive investigations.

Last year, the Sharjah Private Education Authority (SPEA) installed cameras and security devices on 2,000 buses. The cameras allow parents to monitor their children as they go to and from school. Before the pandemic, GPS devices were installed on buses. They are linked to the SPEA monitoring and control room and Emirates Transport’s operations room, to enable monitoring.

Earlier this year, Dubai RTA revealed that some bus drivers were caught driving without a permit. This was confirmed during the 6,323 inspections of school buses carried out between July and December 2023.

To obtain the permit, the driver must successfully complete the necessary training and pass a test established by the RTA Public Transportation Agency.

The driver must not be less than 25 years old, must be of good conduct and have no criminal record.

The driver must present a transit point report received from the authorities and must present a medical fitness certificate issued by an RTA-approved medical center. The same permit is also required for taxi and limousine drivers.

School transportation assistants or bus attendants must also obtain a work permit from the RTA. You must have good conduct and behavior; not less than 25 years; You must be medically fit and pass RTA approved tests.
