UAE residents traveling between Dubai and Sharjah have chosen to avoid the stress of road travel by using the Dubai ferry.

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) resumed operations of the shipping line between Dubai and Sharjah on August 4, after it was briefly suspended during the pandemic.

Saving time and money

One of the many travelers on the ferry is Suleiman Ibrahim, a spice and nut trader in Deira. He resides in the Al Khan neighborhood of Sharjah and completely depends on Dubai Ferry for his daily commute.

“I used to spend more than 3 hours a day on the road, whether by bus or driving. When I first traveled by ferry to work in early September this year, I saved two hours of my time and more than Dh50 a day,” says Ibrahim.

Since he travels between the two emirates between 20 and 22 days a month, he has been able to save up to Dh1,000 a month.

Stress-free alternative

“It’s not just money and time… [road] The traffic caused mental stress, which has greatly decreased. It is a very calm journey every day. I can concentrate more on my work and I think business has also increased,” adds Ibrahim.

Arjun Jaykumar, an engineer who works at Al Jaddaf, agrees. “My father drops me off at the office, but when he comes back he usually takes the ferry.”

“My workplace is a few steps from the subway station. After getting off at Al Ghubaiba metro station, I walk to the nearby maritime station, which is just a 2-minute walk away. The ferry ride takes 35 minutes, so the total travel time to reach home is about an hour,” says Arjun.

“The ferry has made our lives much easier,” he adds.

Meeting on the move

Ardashir, a businessman, prefers the ferry over any other means of transportation from Sharjah. He believes that the trip is very smooth and that he can make the most of the travel time.

“The trip is very quiet… I can talk to my clients and employees, hold meetings in the morning and at night while I’m on the road. This not only saves me time but also [the commute] more fruitful,” says Ardashir.

Big savings during events

A notable advantage highlighted by residents is the substantial financial savings during events such as Gitex and Gulf Food in Dubai. By opting for the ferry, travelers not only reduce their fuel costs but also eliminate the need for expensive parking in Dubai, where fares can reach up to Dh250 at places like the World Trade Center.

“Choosing the Dubai ferry during big events like Gitex and Gulf Food is a game-changer. I save Dh350 a day and a whopping 3 hours on my trip,” says Ahmed, a businessman based in Sharjah.

“It’s not just about money, it’s about saving precious time and enjoying a stress-free trip to these big events,” he adds.

Schedules

From Monday to Friday, two ferries leave Sharjah at 7:00 and 8:30, and one from Dubai at 7:45. In the evening, two trips from Sharjah at 4:45 p.m. and 6:15 p.m., and three trips from Dubai at 4:00 p.m., 5:30 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.

From Friday to Sunday there are six trips, three on each side starting at noon. Departure times from Sharjah are at 2pm, 4pm and 6pm, while trips from Dubai start at 3pm, 5pm and 8pm.
