The number of destinations offering Digital Nomad Visas (DNV) has increased significantly in recent years, with almost half offering visas for at least one year.

According to a new analysis of United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), covering 54 destinations, the rise of DNVs has gone hand in hand with a rise in digital nomads, with destinations across regions working to adapt to the market trend.

The UNWTO Report examines DNV programs in seven areas: application process, visa duration, taxes, insurance, accommodation, minimum income requirements and criminal background checks. The brief looks at the background.
and the current state of digital nomadism trends and provides an analysis of existing DNVs around the world in five regions. Key findings include:

  • 47% of destinations offer visas of up to one year.
  • 39% of destinations exempt digital nomads from paying taxes.
  • 17% of destinations have no minimum income requirements.
  • 76% of destinations have online applications for DNV programs.
  • 80% of destinations process requests within one month.
  • Only 6% of destinations do not charge visa application fees.

A DNV allows people to live and work in a foreign country while maintaining employment or performing freelance work for employers or clients in their home country or another country. With this visa, digital nomads can continue their professional activities while taking advantage of the opportunity to immerse themselves in the unique lifestyle of the host destination, in line with much of the future of work trends. In addition, destinations use DNV to attract professionals from creative and technological areas to stimulate these areas at a national level.
